8:00 to 10:00 pm
Vocal EaseKatherine Byrnes, Kim Henry, and Carolyn Johnston.
front: Tamara Bill, Julia Higgins, and Eliza Tebo.
Blended harmonies filling the hall with symmetry of sound, that's Vocal Ease, University of Arizona's premier, female, a cappella vocal ensemble under the direction of Cathy Letkeman. From being featured artists at the Tucson Jazz Society's Primavera concert in Spring 2001 to providing music while customers enjoy a cup of java, this versatile performing group is in their third season of performing.
This close-knit ensemble of six women performs original arrangements of familiar tunes. Audience members can expect to hear the music of U2, Roberta Flack, The Beatles, Celine Deon, Holly Cole, and Out of Eden as well as some gospel selections from the Sister Act 2 soundtrack. Though the melodies will be recognizable to the average ear, its accompaniment will be unexpected as these vocalists explore the sound vocabulary of the human voice by providing vocal bass lines and percussive accents as a foundation for the harmonies and lead vocals. This performance style is known in the a cappella world as Rockapella. Artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Nylons, and Rockapella were among the first to impact vocal music in this genre.
